Recipe: Candy Cane Cookies

For dough:

  • 1 ½ c butter
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract
  • 1 egg
  • 3 ½ c all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp red food coloring

To finish:

  • ½ c crushed candy canes
  • ½ c sugar

Directions:

Cream butter, sugar and extracts thoroughly. Beat in egg, sift flower with baking powder and salt, stir into butter mixture and combine well. Divide into equal parts, blend red food coloring into one part.

Using 1 tsp of dough, roll to pencil thin strips, 4-5 inches long. Place a white strip with red strip side by side and twist together. Place on ungreased baking sheet, turning one end to form a candy cane shape. Roll strips one at a time, to prevent drying out.

Bake 8-10 minutes at 375 degrees. Cool on a wire rack. Combine crushed candy canes and sugar and sprinkle over warm cookies.

Makes 5 dozen.
