Grow with KARE: Planting a prairie

WOODBURY, Minn. - Acres of invasive species took over areas of Woodbury which will be transformed into a prairie and a savannah in the coming years.

Our friend Ryan from Bailey Nurseries told us about this unique project happening at the home where he grew up in. On that property, there was typical turf grass and acres of land covered with buckthorn and other invasive species that had taken over under a primarily Oak canopy.

His father Bob, took two years to remove and prep the area. In the last few weeks, they have densely planted 12,000 native plants along with three acres of prairie grass and prairie flowers.

This was a collaboration designed by Kelly Norris, the Director of Horticulture and Education, from the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Plants were provided by Bailey Nurseries First Edition plant group and Minnesota Native Landscapes.

It was quite an undertaking and it will be amazing to see how it evolves over the coming years.
