Grow with KARE: Protecting your trees from Emerald Ash Borer

Do you have ash trees? Do you know what to do?

MINNEAPOLIS - The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is putting the 1.1 billion ash trees in Minnesota at risk.

This invasive tree pest was first found in the Twin Cities in 2009 and without preventative treatment, EAB could eat their way through all the state's ash trees, eventually killing them.

During the first few years after infestation, ash decline is slow, and symptoms of EAB are not obvious.

Later, researchers and arborists determined the death curve of ash trees accelerates rapidly and happens between eight and nine years.

Now, arborists such as The Davey Tree Expert Company's Travis MacDonald are looking for dying ash trees that need to be removed. He says it's imperative you inspect your ash trees to ensure they’re not a safety risk and plan for the best next step. That could mean treating or removing and replacing your trees.
