Grow with KARE: The do's and don'ts of early spring gardening

It's early but we're just itching to get in the garden. What can you do?

We all want to jump into gardening season head first. But it is still April.

First get a soil test. This is the best prep for the season ahead.

In general, you should stay off your lawn at this time of year to avoid damaging it. That means don't rake. Weeding chemicals are also useless at this point because the weeds aren't growing yet. Use crab grass preventer when the lilacs are in bloom. Chemical fertilizers are also not recommended.

If you just can't help yourself you can put down some grass seed or organic fertilizer.

If you can pick up soil and it crumbles in your hands rather than clumps in the veggie garden you can plant cool season crops like carrots, radishes, lettuce, kale, strawberries, etc. Broccoli and brussel sprouts are also good to go.

We'll get there! Head to Malmborg's this weekend for their open house!
