BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – Tyson Schnitker began aging his own cocktails before turning his hobby into a full time business.
“It was just an accident. People started telling me, you know, these aged cocktails need to be something that you can buy on the shelves,” Schnitker says.
He and his wife Mary started Skaalvenn distillery almost three years ago in Brooklyn Park. The name Skaalvenn meaning “Cheers Friends” is derived from Norwegian roots and is an homage to Schnitker's heritage.
Schnitker who is also a member in the Army Guard says he was able to take much of his military benefits after serving active duty and being deployed overseas to help start the business.
“You know, I could have bought a mustang with big chrome wheels, big speakers, huge TV," Shcnitker jokes. “But no, I took it and built a business, so yeah, there is a lot of pride in that.”
You can find Skaalvenn at several Minnesota stores. They also have a store locator on their website.
