Mall of America opening temporary space for struggling local businesses

Called the Community Commons, it will be a place where businesses facing hardship can open shop rent-free.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn — The Mall of America is donating a temporary retail space to local businesses that are struggling either due to the COVID-19 pandemic or because of damage from the civil unrest over the summer. 

The 5,000-square-foot space, called Community Commons, will be the rent-free home to 17 of these businesses. It will be located on Level Two, on the south side of Mall of America.

The businesses included sell a variety of products, including apparel, food and beverage, personal care and family gifts.

They are:

  • Art Piece Soul Gallery & Studio, LLC
  • Belle & Virtue Collection
  • Butters by Jay
  • Candy Colors LLC
  • Captain Rebel
  • DAUREN Worldwide
  • Ebony Gifts
  • Fabulous Diva Boutique
  • Herbal Alchemy
  • Heritage Tea & Beverages
  • La Michoacana Purepecha
  • Llakta
  • The Peach Eatery
  • Twiggy Fresh LLC
  • Urban 29
  • VIP Section

The space will also feature the artwork of Juxtaposition Arts, a teen-staffed art design center, gallery, shop and studio in North Minneapolis. 

“The Community Commons initiative is one of hope and possibility as Mall of America joins the efforts to help rebuild the hearts, minds and livelihoods of our diverse retail community,” said Jill Renslow, EVP of Business Development and Marketing for Mall of America, in a press release today. “We are proud to welcome these businesses to Mall of America where guests will be introduced to an even greater slice of what our retail community has to offer beyond the doors of Mall of America.”

Community Commons will open Oct. 1 and remain through Spring 2021.
