WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reporting additional illnesses tied to a recall of bagged grocery store salads first reported in June.
According to the FDA, 641 people have now reported illnesses in 11 states, mostly in the Midwest.
Fresh Express announced a recall on June 27 due to reported Cyclospora infections potentially linked to its salads containing iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage.
The recalled products were sold under the Fresh Express brand, as well as some retail store brands sold by ALDI, Giant Eagle, Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco, ShopRite, and Walmart.
The recalled salads include the product code Z178 or a lower number, with "best by" dates through July 14.
As of July 23, Illinois reported the most illnesses connected to the recall with 198, followed by Iowa (195), Minnesota (73), Missouri (57), Nebraska (55) and Wisconsin (36).
The FDA said out of the 641 total cases, at least 37 have required hospitalization.
The FDA said it is still working to determine the source of the outbreak, and continues to investigate all of the ingredients in the salads.
