1 dead in St. Paul after shooting Wednesday night

St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders says squads were dispatched to the 800 block of Rice Street at approximately 11 p.m. after a report of shots fired and a man down on the sidewalk outside Born's Bar.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - One man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting outside a bar on St. Paul's east side late Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Eddie Cortez Smith, 40, of Saint Paul, MN.

St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders says squads were dispatched to the 800 block of Rice Street at approximately 11 p.m. after a report of shots fired and a man down on the sidewalk outside Born's Bar.

When officers arrived on scene they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Saint Paul Fire Department Paramedics were called to the scene and rushed the victim to Regions Hospital, where he later died.

Linders says two handguns were recovered from the scene, and that the man who called 911 to report the incident was arrested and may be the gunman.

"It raises some questions, but it also makes it a little easier on our investigators," Linders explained. "They have the person in custody who called 911, told them his version of what happened, so now they'll work backwards from there, interview potential witnesses, look at surveillance video and try to figure out what happened."

It is believed the two men knew each other, but police will now attempt to determine what it was that lead up to the fatal shooting. Forensic Services specialists are processing the scene for additional evidence.

The Ramsey County medical examiner will positively identify the victim and determine an exact cause of death. This information, along with any updates on the case, will be release on the Saint Paul Police Department Twitter account, @SPPDMN.
