2 more mental health workers to work alongside St. Paul police

The police department started a unit last year in response to a growing number of mental health calls.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Two mental health workers will soon be working alongside St. Paul police officers.

The City of St. Paul received a federal grant for the additional professionals who will work with officers in the COAST Unit (Community Outreach And Stabilization Unit).

The grant will fund the two mental health worker positions for three years starting in September. 

There are also seven police officers and one sergeant in the COAST Unit.

The COAST Unit was started last year due to a growing number of mental health calls, according to St. Paul officials.
