BEMIDJI, Minn. — A Twin Cities man died in the Beltrami County Jail in Bemidji Sunday after suffering what authorities are calling an "unknown medical condition."

Chief Deputy Sheriff Ernie Beitel says the inmate, 27-year-old Hardel H. Sherrell of Apple Valley, collapsed in the presence of a corrections officer and a medical technician just before 5 p.m. and couldn't be revived. Staff immediately began CPR and used an AED in an attempt to restart Sherrell's heart, but he died at the scene.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will assist Bemidji Police and the Beltrami County Coroner's Office in conducting the investigation into the inmate's death.
