Attorneys: Rassier, Larson plan to sue local law enforcement

One day after the confessed killer of Jacob Wetterling was sentenced to prison another man, previously named a “person of interest” in the case, announced his plans to file a lawsuit against the Stearns County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Attorney of former "person of interest" in Jacob Wetterling case, Dan Rassier, outlines civil case they plan to file against law enforcement.

MINNEAPOLIS - One day after the confessed killer of Jacob Wetterling was sentenced to prison another man, previously named a “person of interest” in the case, announced his plans to file a lawsuit against the Stearns County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Daniel Rassier's attorney says they haven't filed the lawsuit yet, but they expect to do so by the end of the year and after law enforcement releases the file on the Wetterling investigation. Attorney Michael Padden maintains Rassier never should have been named in the case.

Wetterling was abducted at the end of Rassier’s driveway in 1989. On Monday, 53-year-old Danny Heinrich was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison on unrelated child pornography charges after also confessing to abducting, assaulting and murdering Wetterling.

Also present at the press conference announcing the lawsuit was Ryan Larson and his attorney, Devon Jacob. Larson is filing a separate lawsuit against local law enforcement, including Stearns County and the City of Cold Spring, after Jacob said his client was falsely accused in the 2012 murder of Cold Spring Police Officer Thomas Decker. Larson was arrested in that case but was released and not charged after investigators said there was no evidence linking him to Decker's death. Larson was cleared by authorities in August 2013.
