Como Zoo launches new sensory-friendly program

For guests with autism or other sensory needs, a new program will help them explore Como Zoo before the general public.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - For individuals with autism or other sensory needs, a busy place like Como Zoo can be loud and overwhelming. But thanks to a new program, guests will now be able to visit before the park opens to ensure their visit is a positive one.

Como Park Zoo and Conservatory announced the new program Monday, called "Autism Friendly Early Entry Days," where visitors on the autism spectrum and their families will be able to come to the zoo before the doors are open to the general public.

Como will open at 9 a.m. so that those visiting will have the chance "to spend time exploring exhibits, and participate in activities designed specifically for them," according to the zoo's website.

The zoo is also offering downloadable materials like a sensory map and visual schedule that will help families plan their visit and know what to expect.

"Working in collaboration with the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM), Como has also created a “Social Narrative” guide. This guide ... helps visitors reduce their anxiety about new experiences by explaining what to expect step-by-step as they explore the Zoo and Conservatory," the website states.
