Could 'bulletproof backpacks' keep kids safer?

According the label from the manufacturer it's a Level IIIA protection, which means it will stop a 44 magnum. But not a high-velocity rifle.

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, Minn. - "Bulletproof backpacks" went on sale this week at an Office Max in Inver Grove Heights.

A store rep told KARE 11 the first bag was purchased Thursday. But some say these backpacks are a sad reminder of reality.

Across America students have survived mass shootings. Now, kids are growing up learning to barricade doors and hide under tables.

It says bulletproof. A member of law enforcement who examined the bag told us nothing is bulletproof, instead bullet resistant. According the label from the manufacturer it’s a Level IIIA protection, which means it will stop a 44 magnum. But not a high-velocity rifle.

The bag, created by Guard Dog, costs $187.02 with tax. Other styles cost more.

Would you purchase one for your children? Will these make children feel safer? Will schools allow backpacks in the classroom, or will they be stored in lockers?

Parents who talked to us had a variety of responses.
