BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A Brooklyn Park man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for causing the death of his two-month-old son.

Derrick Johnson was handed the 240-month sentence Tuesday after pleading guilty to the unintentional second-degree murder of his son.

A criminal complaint filed against Johnson details how police responded to a report of an unconscious baby on Sept. 3, 2019 on the 5800 block of 73rd Avenue North.

When officers arrived they were unable to find a pulse and said the infant felt cool to the touch, prosecutors said.

The infant was rushed to the hospital where an emergency room doctor told officers the baby had died about 30 minutes to two hours prior to arrival.

An autopsy by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office revealed the baby had suffered multiple fractures, which indicated blunt force trauma.

Johnson admitted to intentionally striking his son with the intent to cause harm in his guilty plea, and further admitted that the severe injuries he inflicted caused the death of the child.
