MINNEAPOLIS - A Minneapolis man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday, moments after hearing the anguish experienced by the family of the man he murdered.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Darryll Lamont Wilkes shot and murdered a man on Dec. 13, 2017 inside an apartment on the 1400 block of Portland Avenue. Wilkes fired a single shot to the head of 34-year-old Gerald Buffet after the two had argued.

In Hennepin County District Court Monday Wilkes listened as a victim's advocate read a statement from Buffet's father, in which he said "Words cannot express the pain and anguish I have felt since this senseless act. There will be no more birthdays, backyard BBQ gatherings during holidays… no more hearing his laughter, no more hugs or seeing his smile. You (Wilkes) took that all away.”

After the victim statement Wilkes was sentenced to 240 months, or 20 years in prison.
