Man shot in St. Paul parking lot marks city's 30th homicide of the year

St. Paul Police say the victim was found in the J & P Trading parking lot, shot in the head and torso.

ST PAUL, Minn. — A man who was found shot in the head and torso in the parking lot of J & P Trading in St. Paul Thursday night has died, according to police.

Officers were called to the 200 block of State Street around 5:30 p.m. where they found a male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Regions Hospital with "life threatening injuries."

At 10:53 p.m., St. Paul Police shared an update on Twitter that the victim had died.This is the city's 30th homicide of the year.

The victim has been identified as Antonio Espana-Estrada, 37, of Minneapolis.

According to St. Paul Police, shortly after the shooting officers responded to the intersection of Jackson St. and Sycamore St. East, near Oakland Cemetery, to investigate an assault. When authorities arrived on scene, they found an injured woman and a vehicle that had crashed into the Oakland Cemetery fence. 

Police say the woman suffered a head injury, believed to be non-life threatening, caused by either falling out or being pushed out of the van before the crash. According to police. the driver of the van fled the scene on foot and a 37-year-old man was arrested.

Investigations into both the shooting and crash are ongoing, but police say they're considering the possibility that the two incidents are related.
