Sherburne Co. correctional officer assaulted, seriously injured

In an interview after the assault, the inmate said he was looking to assault the next officer he saw due to his hatred for law enforcement, officials said.

SHERBURNE COUNTY, Minn. — An inmate at the Sherburne County Jail assaulted a correctional officer Monday morning, sending the officer to the hospital with serious injuries, according to Sheriff Joel Brott.

The correctional officer was performing routine duties at around 11 a.m. when the inmate struck him from behind on the right side of the head, according to Brott.

The officer fell to the ground, and the inmate continued to assault him, officials said.

In an interview after the assault, the inmate said he was looking to assault the next officer he saw due to his hatred for law enforcement, according to the sheriff's office.

The correctional officer, who is a 16-year employee, is expected to make a full recovery.
