St. Paul mother killed in homicide reported shooting last week

Lashonda Nix is the 39th person to be murdered in St. Paul in 2022, which is a new record number.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Responding to a 911 call inside a home on Cook Avenue in St. Paul's Payne-Phalen neighborhood Monday night, police found a woman shot in the head.

"St. Paul fire paramedics responded and pronounced her dead on scene," said St. Paul Police Sgt. Mike Ernster.

The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Lashonda Nix, who was a mother of four with a grandchild.

No one has been arrested and police have not been able to provide a suspected motive as for why anyone would want to harm Nix, who family members post had a lot going for her.

A police report provided by St. Paul police through a data request reveals just one week ago -- Nix reported another shooting.

Police say an 18-year-old man was shot in the face outside and ran to Nix's home, where he knew someone inside. Nix called 911 and that teen went to the hospital with the injury.

But there is no word yet whether than incident is directly connected to the shooting that took Nix's life.

"But the biggest thing is we do need help. We need help from people; we need people to call us. If anybody saw anything that occurred out there, we would encourage them to call our homicide unit," Ernster said.

Nix's death marks a somber record in the city of St. Paul. She is the 39th person murdered, which breaks last year's record of 38 with a week and a half remaining in 2022.

St. Paul Police have solved 82 percent of this year's homicides.
