GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. — A 20-year-old woman is dead and a teen is in custody after a fatal stabbing on an elementary school playground late Tuesday.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Scott Johnson says his officers were dispatched to Murphy Elementary School around 9:45 p.m. and found a 15-year-old boy standing with a knife in his hand, and the young woman lying on the ground with a stab wound to her abdomen. She was rushed to Grand Itasca Hospital but soon died from her injuries.
The teen was taken into custody and awaits possible murder charges. Chief Johnson is emphasizing that the violent incident is not directly related to the school where it happened.
"We believe this meeting was arranged by these two people and not related to the school. The public is not in danger. Drugs were found at the scene," Johnson said in a released statement.
The victim will be identified later Wednesday after family is notified of her death.
