MINNEAPOLIS - Hennepin County officials say a cyberattack has targeted the county employee email system.
According to a release sent out on Thursday, a "sophisticated" cyberattack accessed employees' email accounts by using credentials the hackers got through phishing emails around the end of June.
About 20 employees' email accounts were compromised, according to the county. The attackers sent malicious emails from those accounts, the release says.
The county is now evaluating what private data may have been accessed in the hack. They say some of the emails may have contained private information about people who receive county services.
Hennepin County has referred the case to the FBI for investigation. The county is also investigating and will put together a report and publish it for the public to view online.
