LAVELLE TOWNSHIP, Minn. - The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is now investigating a homicide on the Iron Range after a woman was found dead in her home.
The Saint Louis County Sheriff's Office says the body of 71-year-old, Courtney Fenske was discovered in her home on South Townline Road in the Lavell Township on November 29. Lavell Township is located just outside of Hibbing.
Investigators say foul play is suspected.
Lt. Jason Akerson with the St. Louis County Sherrif's Office says the reason they believe this is a homicide is because of the way in which her body was found.
While details are limited at this time he says Fenske's body, and the area surrounding it suggest Fenske didn't die of natural causes.
The senior was discovered by police after a concerned neighbor called for a welfare check because Fenske had not been picking up her mail. Investigators say based on the medical examiner's findings, they believe Fenske died sometime between Sunday, November 26th and the following Monday. That report is still preliminary.
Police are asking anyone who may have had contact with Fenske or noted any suspicious activity around her home during this time to call the St. Louis County 911 Center at 218-742-9825.
At this time, Lt. Akerson says there is no evidence that suggests the public is in any danger. He says if at any point they come to that conclusion they will notify the public immediately.
The sheriff's office is working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The investigation is very active and ongoing.
