DNR expects great conditions for Saturday's fishing opener

Fishing opener marks the day fishing can begin for walleye, northern pike and trout in lakes.

At DH Custom Rod and Tackle along Lake Minnetonka, Shawn Schlosser is making sure no angler goes unprepared this weekend.

"Getting everybody's orders all ready," said Schlosser. "It's been very busy kind of playing catch-up."

The long winter makes this weekend even more special.

"Up to us to get out there and get on some fish," said Schlosser.

The DNR says conditions are shaping up to be pretty good even with higher water levels and colder water temperatures.

"We've been seeing nice blue gills, nice crappies, nice walleyes, nice pike," said T.J. DeBates with DNR.

He says the high water levels may be a positive.

"What will happen is those move in from the deeper colder water and they move into the shallows because that water is warmer," said DeBates. "You'll
have more fish concentrated in those areas and they might be susceptible to angling."

There's also a safety reminder for those out on boats with colder water out there.

"Make sure you have a life jackets. Make sure you're taking all the precautions," said DeBates.

All signs point towards a good opener.

"I think it's going to be great fishing," said Schlosser. "I'm very excited and looking forward to it."
