Fort Snelling State Park to be closed for weeks

Park managers say there's a good chance the park will be closed until Memorial Day weekend.

FORT SNELLING, Minn. — Warmer weather? Check.

"Take advantage of the weather and go for a walk," said Cassie Janssen.

Dog ready to go? Check.

"Yeah that's Keke."

Fort Snelling State Park? That's a no-go.

Janssen was hoping for a great day at the park along the Minnesota River with her dog. She found "road closed" signs.

"A little disappointing," said Janssen.

Unfortunately the Minnesota River had other plans, and visitors won't have access for a long time.

"Provide more impact than 2014," said Park Manager Kelli Bruns.

She says there's a good chance the park will be closed until around Memorial Day weekend. That's not just because they're waiting for the water to recede.

"We have to find if the trail is even there anymore. A lot of debris can be moved and deposited," said Bruns.

This is already the worst flooding at Fort Snelling State Park since 2014.

Meanwhile in downtown St. Paul, city leaders have completed their first temporary flood wall since 2014.

"That can hold back 23-24 feet," said city public works director Kathy Lantry. "So I think we're good. If anything changes we do have the ability to add another three feet on top of this temporary levee."
