ST. CLOUD, Minn. - A grass fire burned close to 250 acres across the road from the St. Cloud prison, according to fire officials.

The St. Cloud Fire Department says someone noticed the flames and called in just after 2 p.m. on Sunday. Fire officials say the wind spread the fire faster, but also blew it away from other structures in the area. It burned trees, grass and old farmland south of the state correctional facility off of Highway 10.

Authorities say a small building that hadn't been used in a long time was damaged. The affected land hosts some ski trails in the winter but has been closed to the public since April 1.

The DNR and the St. Cloud Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.

The St. Cloud Fire Department, the DNR, and four other fire departments were on the scene.
