KARE 11 Investigates wins Society of Professional Journalists award

The award was given for a story of how taxpayers were ripped off while officials here in Minnesota were apparently asleep at the wheel.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — KARE 11 Investigates has won a national award from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

KARE won a Sigma Delta Chi Award for its investigative documentary Double Billing the Badge: The Patrol Car Payback, in the category for large-market TV station documentaries. SPJ named A.J. Lagoe, Steve Eckert and Gary Knox from the KARE 11 Investigates team. The award honors "exceptional professional journalism produced in 2018."

The investigation is the story of how taxpayers were ripped off while officials here in Minnesota were apparently asleep at the wheel.

They didn’t wake up until after KARE 11 began investigating the police car double billing scheme almost two years ago.

Since then, the man at the center of the swindle has been convicted of a felony. 

More than three-quarters of a million dollars have been refunded to law enforcement agencies statewide.
