Ship afloat after running aground in Duluth

A freighter that ran aground and nearly hit Duluth's break wall on Sunday is free again after heavy rains caused water levels in the harbor to rise.

The M/V American Spirit, a 1,004-foot ship, became grounded Sunday morning about 50 feet from the wall near the Aerial Lift Bridge. There were strong winds and heavy rains at the time, but the cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Crews are now examining the hull for damage.

5-year-old caught by passerby after hanging out window, mom charged

A woman is charged with child endangerment after her 5-year-old daughter was found by a passerby hanging from a second-story window, according to charges filed in Sibley County.

Authorities say 47-year-old April Grams was asleep when the incident happened around 9 p.m. last Thursday.

The child was hanging from the window when a motorist and her son were driving by. They quickly stopped their car and her son ran to the home, where he was able to catch the girl before she hit the ground.

Deputy rescues driver after car goes off bridge

A Douglas County sheriff's deputy rescued a woman after her car plunged into Lake Latoka near Alexandria Saturday night.

Beverly Toso, 76, of Hoffman, was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-94 in an area where a bridge was being replaced. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, her Toyota Avalon did not stop in time and the car launched off the road surface into the channel of Lake Latoka.

Deputy Ben Jarvi tied a rope around his waist, waded into the lake and pulled the woman to safety. The water was 4 inches below the top of her vehicle.

Vikings to induct Denny Green into Ring of Honor

The late Vikings head coach Dennis Green will be officially inducted into the team's Ring of Honor at halftime of the Vikings' home game versus the Buffalo Bills September 23 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Green served as head coach of the Vikings from 1992 to 2001, notching 101 victories and leading the team to a pair of NFC Championship games. His Vikings made the NFL Playoffs in eight of Green's 10 seasons in Minnesota.

Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed Green's wife Marie of the honor at club headquarters in Eagan last Friday.
