Victims ID'd in Spring Lake Park house fire

The fire was reported by neighbors Saturday night.

SPRING LAKE PARK, Minn. — Two men killed in a house fire in Spring Lake Park Saturday night have been identified.

Spring Lake Park Police say 56-year-old Richard Dean Nelson and 53-year-old Rodney Dennis Nelson perished when their home on the 500 block of 82nd Avenue Northeast caught fire.

Emergency crews were called out to the home just before 9:00 p.m. Saturday when neighbors saw it burning.

"We saw a garage on fire," said neighbor Elizabeth Bartlett.

"Fire spread really quickly from the garage to the main part of the house," said neighbor Andy Olson.

On November 16, 2019 at approximately 8:51 PM, firefighters and police responded to a residential house fire in Spring Lake Park.

When crews arrived the attached garage was fully engulfed in flames and it had spread to the home.

"Probably the scariest thing I've ever seen," said Bartlett.

"All the neighbors were hoping they were not home," said Olson.

After the fire was put out, crews found Richard and Rodney Nelson inside. At this point authorities haven't released a cause for the fatal fire.
