2 instructors assaulted by student at Normandale

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Police in Bloomington say a college instructor was assaulted Wednesday morning by a student.

Police say the 21-year-old student, from St. Paul, struck a female instructor several times after an argument in the classroom. A male instructor attempted to intervene in the fight and was also assaulted, Bloomington Police state. 

The student fled the scene and was taken into custody in the college parking ramp. At the time of his arrest, police say a gun was found in his backpack. 

According to Public Information Officer Deputy Chief Mike Hartley, the Normandale Community College instructor was brought to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. 

The student is being held at the Bloomington Police Department on possible charges of third-degree assault, fifth-degree assault and possession of a firearm without a permit. 

Hartley said the other instructor did not require hospital treatment.

According to Steve Geller with Normandale, the assault happened as class was ending and he does not believe many students witnessed it.
