LAKE ELMO, Minn. — Ice Castles might not be returning to Stillwater after all.
Despite the Stillwater City Council unanimously approving a contract to have the popular attraction return, Ice Castles CEO Ryan Davis said that they are exploring other locations because of the elevated water levels from the St. Croix River and the potential for flooding in the area where Ice Castles intended to build.
"We are considering Lake Elmo as a possible location this winter, but no plans have been finalized yet," said Davis in a statement. "We hope to have a final decision made in the next week to bring the magic of Ice Castles back to Minnesota for another season."
Lake Elmo City Council confirmed its interest in adopting Ice Castles but the decision will ultimately be decided by Ice Castles LLC.

Ice Castles debuted in Stillwater back in 2016 but moved to Excelsior last year because of the work being done on the Stillwater Lift Bridge.
The city of Stillwater said in a release earlier this month that nearly 100,000 people attended the Ice Castle event in their city back in 2017 and 2018. As a result, Stillwater City Administrator Tom McCarty, said they are still hopeful Ice Castles returns this winter.
