SANDWICH GENERATION: AARP Minnesota salutes Black History Month & Saint Paul treasure

A local community center is celebrating more than 90 years of improving the quality of life for residents and families.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — February is Black History Month. To celebrate, AARP MN honors African American culture, people, events, and history and pays tribute to the partnership and the work of the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, especially years of service and positive impact on older adults.

Hallie Q. Brown Community Center's mission is to improve the quality of life in our community by providing access to critical human services, fostering and promoting personal growth and developing community leadership. Founded in 1929, Hallie Q. Brown Community Center had its origins as a settlement house for African Americans denied services by other agencies, welcoming the entire population of Saint Paul’s Summit-University neighborhood. It has grown and adapted with the community around it, and today offers six main program areas. AARP MN partners with Hallie Q. Brown Community Center to host events and workshops geared toward connection and local impact.

Together, AARP MN and Hallie Q. Brown invite the community to participate in their partnered hosted events that happen year-round, including: Intergenerational Gardening, Rondo Days, National Night Out, Tech Workshops, Healthy Aging community fair, and special movie documentary screenings. Hallie Q. Brown serves as a gathering place for seniors to enhance their independence through connection to services and activities. Their programs, Magnificent Golden Agers and the Retired Men’s Club, meet regularly and welcome new members.

AARP is the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. With a nationwide presence and nearly 38 million members, AARP strengthens communities and advocates for what matters most to families: health security, financial stability and personal fulfillment.
