Critical need for Type O blood

ST PAUL, Minn. — Memorial Blood Centers says it's facing a serious challenge in collecting enough blood to meet the needs of local hospitals.

Friday, it's holding a "Just for Os" blood drive on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at its St. Paul donor center at 737 Pelham Boulevard.

Type O blood is in demand, especially O negative, which is stored on air ambulances throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin for trauma patients.

You may be eligible to donate if you meet the following criteria:

• In good health

• Free of antibiotics for 24 hours, unless taken daily for a skin condition

• Symptom-free for at least 3 days following a cold or flu

• 17 years or older—or 16 with written parental consent
