How to find a hidden camera in an Airbnb

If you're worried about the chance of discovering a hidden camera in somewhere like an Airbnb, use these tactics to make sure your privacy is secure.

Trusting someone to use your home for a temporary rental can be stressful - but what about trusting someone who has rented their home to you?

Some people who have used Airbnb when traveling say they have discovered hidden cameras in their rooms.

While Airbnb does allow surveillance cameras as long as they've been disclosed in the rental listing, hidden cameras in bedrooms and bathrooms are never allowed, according to the Airbnb website.

According to NBC, some Airbnb hosts choose to have hidden cameras for their own peace of mind. Be sure to read your terms and conditions closely before agreeing to rent an Airbnb. Your host may have disclosed a hidden camera.

If you're worried about the chance of discovering a hidden camera in somewhere like an Airbnb, use these tactics to make sure your privacy is secure.

1. Look for small electronic devices that seem strange

Double-check small devices like alarm clocks and smoke detectors when you get in the room - Digital Trends says that a sign of hidden cameras could be extra wires or holes in these small devices.

2. Open all doors and drawers

Make sure to open all the drawers and cabinets in your room and bathroom. This includes closets and storage spaces. The website lifehacker says that some hidden cameras may need space to store their wiring.

3. Check the room with a flashlight

Digital Trends says that using a flashlight could help detect hidden cameras by reflecting light off lenses. Check the room for small bits of reflecting light.

What to do if you find a hidden camera

If your Airbnb host tells you after you're in the listing that there are hidden cameras, notify the company immediately. The Airbnb website says that you can cancel the reservation and get your money back.

If you find a camera and were never told about any surveillance, contact the police in the area where you are staying. Then, contact Airbnb.
