KARE in the Kitchen: Mama Lew's Buttermilk Belgian Waffles

In honor of Mother's Day, Alicia and Mama Lew are whipping up these breakfast delights. It's a recipe that's been passed down for generations!

OSCEOLA, Wis. — In honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday, this week’s KARE in the Kitchen guest is none other than Alicia’s mom, a.k.a. Mama Lew!

She is making her famous Buttermilk Belgian Waffles that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Once you try these light fluffy waffles… you’ll never buy them frozen again. Enjoy!

Mama Lew’s Buttermilk Belgian Waffles

(serves 5-6)

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cup of sifted flour
  • 2tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tblsp sugar
  • 2 beaten egg yolks
  • 2 cups of buttermilk
  • ½ cup oil

Directions

  • Sift all of your dry ingredients and mix together. Combine your yolks, buttermilk and oil in large mixing bowl.
  • Beat your egg whites in a separate bowl until they are stiff and have peaks!
  • Stir your dry ingredients with your wet. After that, fold your egg whites into the mixture. (Be gentle with this… you want your batter to be light and fluffy!
  • Heat up your waffle iron and spray with a non-stick cooking spray.
  • Cook for 3 minutes or until the “ready” light comes on.
  • Top with your favorite berries or you can add walnuts to the mix before cooking!
