MINNEAPOLIS — This weekend, Minneapolis will show off that it's a true literary hub with the all-new 'Wordplay' festival, bringing in celebrity authors such as Stephen King, Amy Tan, Dave Barry and Mitch Albom.
It's being called Minnesota's largest celebration of readers, writers and great books. The Loft, one of the largest literary centers in the country, is hosting the event. The Loft has a theater, and is a space for writers to work on their craft.
About 100 authors, more than 30 of them from Minnesota, will be in town to appear on eight indoor and outdoor stages between the Guthrie Theater, Mill City Farmers Market and Open Book.
"I've had authors tell me when I didn't live in Minnesota that Minnesota was one of their favorite stops because the fans would just really come out to bookstores," said Steph Opitz, founding director of Wordplay.
Opitz said it took about two years to plan the festival and she expects 10,000 people to attend.
"I would love for people to walk away with a book from an author they haven't heard before coming to Wordplay," she added.
Authors from all sorts of genres will be at Wordplay, including authors of children's books, too.
Tickets range from $10 to $250.
