U of M researcher identifies virus linked to polio-like illness AFM

New research led by a team at the University of Minnesota has finally confirmed a link between a fairly common virus and a polio-like illness that's causing paralysis in young children. Dr. Heidi Moline led the research into recent cases of Acute Flaccid Myelitis, which spiked in Minnesota and across the country last year. After studying one Minnesota child, researchers discovered he had a virus known as Enterovirus D68. Doctors have apparenty long suspected the virus is linked to AFM, but it had never shown up in testing before now. These new findings could help doctors identify the illness sooner, because they would first test kids for the virus.
