Construction work will soon be underway for the new Southwest Light Rail line. Because of the construction, portions of the Cedar Lake Trail and Kenilworth Trail will be closed. The trails will remain closed for two to three years. Detour signage will notify trail users of alternative routes, which have been designated in coordination with the community and project partners.Cedar Lake Trail will be closed through Hopkins and St. Louis Park until Fall 2021. Kenilworth Trail will be closed in Minneapolis until Summer 2022.
Governor Tim Walz and legislative leaders met Sunday night to continue budget talks but were unable to strike a deal. Lawmakers have until May 20 to pass a two-year budget for the period beginning July 1, 2019. If they miss that deadline, the governor would have to call a special session to avoid a partial state government shutdown. Negotiations were put on hold earlier in the week but resumed Sunday at 7 p.m. Lawmakers are trying to come to an agreement on the state's two-year, nearly $50 billion budget, but remain two billion dollars apart. So far, lawmakers have not passed any of the ten major finance bills.
Two metro transit police are on leave after a man hurt himself in the back of a squad car on Sunday, according to Metro Transit officials. The man had been arrested as a suspect in an ongoing criminal sexual conduct investigation.While he was in the back of the squad car, Metro Transit Police said the man harmed himself. After officers removed him from the squad car, the man was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center with critical injuries, Metro Transit Police said. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
