GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Mayo Clinic: CBD oils may be helpful, but more research is needed

Mayo Clinic Proceedings will publish a paper in September showing a growing body of pre-clinical and clinical evidence that CBD oils may be effective in treating conditions like chronic pain and opioid abuse. However, due to the lack of testing done on humans, Mayo Clinic researchers say more testing is needed before CBD oils are declared helpful and safe. One of the concerns is CBD and hemp oil products are not regulated by the FDA. Consumers buying oral or topical oils, creams, sprays and tablets are buying products with varying amounts of CBD, and the products may also contain other active compounds. The Mayo Clinic advises that you talk to your doctor about possible side effects and the way CBD could interact with other medications, before using any form of cannabidiol.

Toddler fights for access to “World’s Most Expensive Drug”

Maddy Bruce is an almost-two-year-old diagnosed before birth with SMA, a genetic disorder that causes muscle weakness.   In the worst cases, it leads to death for children.  In other cases, if left untreated, SMA causes severe respiratory issues, prevents kids from breathing on their own and makes walking impossible. Zolgensma is a drug that could potentially cure Maddy. Priced at two million dollars, Zolgensma makes headlines for the eye-popping cost.  In the long term, the one time treatment is actually less expensive than a lifetime of injections of another drug used to treat the toddler’s condition.  But the drug’s high price has raised ethical dilemmas about what a cure for kids like Maddy is worth.

Getting to the Fair: Changes to Park & Ride, State Fair Express

Heading to the State Fair today? There have been changes to this year's traffic flow, in the hopes we can all avoid last year's jams.

1. The State Fair's Park & Ride: Operated by the State Fair, it's free to park your car in one of the 34 designated lots and ride a bus to the fair. They've added three new locations this year.

2. Metro Transit's State Fair Express: Operated by Metro Transit and partners, it is free to park your vehicle in one of the designated lots, but you'll pay $5-$6 for the bus ride.

3. Driving: Leave early. Fair spokespeople say most of the lots fill up in the early morning.

WEATHER: Beautiful weather for the first day of the State Fair
