Sven Explains: Trying to save the Northern White Rhinos

Scientists work to save the species, as only two females survive.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — You may recall hearing about the death of Sudan, the LAST male northern white Rhino. Only two females survive and attempts to artificially inseminate them failed while he was living.

Using Sudan’s and frozen sperm from other deceased males, scientists fertilized eggs extracted from the last two surviving females: 7 out of 10 successfully!

The next step will be to see if the eggs can successfully grow and then be put into a surrogate and even then gestation takes 16 months. BUT- scientists say they can repeat this process to learn more each time, helping to perhaps save other species in the future if successful.
