MnDOT workers rally for co-worker

Bridge designer battling cancer after surviving cystic fibrosis for 39 years.

Jeremy Greene wasn't supposed to live past age 8.

"Living with a terminal illness makes you step back, appreciate things a little more," he said.

As a baby, he was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, an incurable disorder where mucus blocks airways.

"I lived to 8, then they told them good luck seeing 13," Greene said.

Then at age 14, he suffered Lyme Disease.

"Which ate the cartilage before they could catch it," Greene said.

Despite his health issues, Jeremy has lived optimistically. Playing sports, racing snowmobiles, and raising a son.

"I've done more in 39 years that a lot of people get to do in a lifetime," Greene said.

But now he's facing his toughest fight: stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

He had moved back to Minnesota earlier this year to get the best cystic fibrosis treatment in the country  and took a job with MnDot.

Unfortunately that meant when he got the cancer diagnosis, he hadn't been at the new job long enough to qualify for paid medical leave.

"So we're trying to find ways to not lose the job," Greene said.

"It's very hard to see," said Greene's co-worker Melissa Schultz.

Jeremy's coworkers from the MnDot bridge office were touched by Jeremy in the short time he's been there.

"He's brought so much joy to our office, as soon as he started the place just kind of became a different place," said co-worker Lisa Gaughan.

They are donating their unused vacation time to Jeremy so he can afford to take time off for cancer treatment. And they've started a Gofundme Page to help with the extra bills.

"He needs to focus on his health, and if we can raise enough money to ease that financial burden, that eases stress on him,"

Now Jeremy's goal is to reach 40. And he wants everyone who's helped him this year know how much he appreciates it.

"All I can say is the people I work with are amazing. They've stepped up and done everything they could possibly do to make everything for me easier," Greene said.

The Gofundme page to help Greene can be found at this link.
