Spring clean your fridge for healthier eating

The way you organize your fridge is key to living a healthy lifestyle.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Everyone thinks about spring cleaning their house, but what about their fridge?

In preparation for the warmer months ahead, Profile by Sanford has tips to “spring clean” your fridge to encourage healthy eating habits.

Danette Peterson, registered dietician, shared these tips:

1.The way you organize your fridge is key to living a healthy lifestyle. Keep fresh fruits and veggies at eye level, prepped and cut up to ensure that’s the first thing you reach for when choosing a snack and packing lunches. This will also make it easier to avoid going out to eat, by providing an easy way to quickly pack a healthy lunch for work with healthy options prepared to grab and go.

2. It is important to replace processed items that contain unhealthy fats and sugars with healthier substitutes. Get rid of the processed meat in your fridge (bacon, sausage, packaged lunch meat) and replace it with lean protein (chicken, salmon, tofu, eggs) Replace soda and juices with sparkling water or fruit-infused water. Replace condiments such as sour cream, mayo, ranch and ketchup with condiments such as mustard, hummus, pesto, greek yogurt (a great substitute for sour cream) or salsa.
