Northside neighbors gather for night of prayer, healing in wake of Tyre Nichols police killing

Letting go of the pain of witnessing police brutality is much easier said than done, which is why some found themselves at Shiloh Temple in Minneapolis Tuesday.

MINNEAPOLIS — The release of body camera video in the police killing of Tyre Nichols is weighing heavily on the hearts and minds of those in communities near and far.

"We are calling on you, Lord Jesus, so that we can rebuild hope in our people; so that we can rebuild trust in our community," said Bishop Harding Smith as he prayed for those who gathered at Shiloh Temple Tuesday evening.

Letting go of the pain of witnessing police brutality is much easier said than done, which is why some found themselves at Shiloh Temple International Ministries in north Minneapolis.

"We come here to be healed, we leave here with hope," said Bishop Richard Howell, senior pastor at Shiloh Temple.

Hope at a time when many are trying to overcome the traumas of seeing Tyre Nichols killed at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve.

"Even though it didn't happen here, we can feel the vibration," said Bishop Smith.

In the hearts of mothers like Valerie Castile, whose son Philando was shot and killed during a traffic stop in 2016.

"Ain't none of this mess new — ain't none of it new. It's just a repeat of history. It just goes round and round because nobody wants to change anything," said Castile, while speaking at Shiloh Temple.

A change in laws she says she's spent the last seven years pushing to see through.

"We would definitely have some different outcomes if there was some implementation with these recommendations," said Castile.

"It goes to say that our work is not over," said Bishop Smith.

As communities come together as one, to heal.

"Our communities are suffering, our nation is suffering, but there's still hope," said Bishop Howell.

The team at Shiloh Temple hopes to host more opportunities to provide space for people to speak freely and heal together, as the calls for police reform continue.
