BLAINE, Minn. — A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Blaine late Wednesday, and the driver is in custody after attempting to flee the scene.
Police were dispatched to the Target at 1500 109th Ave. NE just after 9:30 p.m. on reports of a person on foot who was hit by a motorist who then left the area. Officers arrived on scene and attempted lifesaving treatment until an ambulance crew arrived. Unfortunately, 58-year-old Kenneth Alan Niesen died after being transported to a nearby hospital.
Anoka County deputies later located the suspect, a 30-year-old St. Paul man, who ran from them. After a short foot pursuit that person was taken into custody pending charges.
KARE 11 is not naming the driver as he has not been officially charged.
The Midwest Medical Examiners Office is performing an autopsy on the victim, and will release a cause of death.
KARE 11 received a statement from a family spokesperson that reads:
"Ken was the most wonderful son, brother, husband, father, and friend to everyone he met. Words cannot express our grief. Our family asks for privacy as we mourn this tragic loss."
