Snow plow drivers train for Minn. winter

New plow drivers getting trained for the long Minnesota winter ahead.

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - Jon Yankovec is entering his eighth year plowing snow with Ramsey County.

“It's fun, it's a lot of work - it's stressful at the same time,” Yankovec says. “But you see your results and we know it's making the roads safer.”

Yankovec is one of the guys helping train new plow drivers over the past week at the state fairgrounds.

The training, called SPOT, combines drivers from Hennepin County and Ramsey County, along with the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

It includes an obstacle course for drivers to maneuver and also time in the classroom learning about what it takes when mother nature ramps us.

In all, around fifty drivers are going through training this year, getting prepped to maneuver trucks that cost up to about $260,000.

From Yankovec - a reminder about how drivers on the road can help them do their job this winter.

“When they're trying to pass us and do things that are not safe for them, it puts us and them in danger. It's just not safe to pass a plow. Give them space,” he says.
