ST. CROIX COUNTY, Wis. — The St. Croix County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted carjacking that occurred in Hudson Township Sunday night.

Police were called to the scene near County Highway North and US-12 around 8:37 p.m. on Nov. 13. The victims of the attempted carjacking told police that they were driving on the highway when a vehicle pulled out ahead of them and "forced them to stop," according to a press release.

A man then stepped out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at the victims' car. The victims said they drove away but according to a press release, the male suspect "fired at them" and hit their vehicle. The man then followed them for a short while before heading west on I-94. Police said the suspect's vehicle was seen driving off, however they were unable to catch him as he drove into Minnesota.

Police described the suspect's vehicle as a black Lincoln sedan.

No injuries were reported from the incident, and the St. Croix County Sherriff is asking anyone with information to contact the office.

The Sunday night incident is just one of multiple local occurrences over the past year.

In Ramsey County, officials recently warned motorists about "bump-and-rob" carjackings, where a driver bumps into another and then tries to rob the victims at gunpoint, which have become more common around the Twin Cities metro.

Over the summer, a 17-year-old was sentenced to more than eight years in prison for felonies related to a series of carjackings in the Twin Cities, including a high-profile incident in Edina last December.

In June, a man agreed to plead guilty to a number of state charges as part of a plea deal for his role in a 10-day crime spree that involved victims from at least 15 communities across the metro.

And in August, the City of Minneapolis issued a warning about an increase in reported robberies and carjackings in the Ventura Village and Midtown Phillips neighborhoods.

However, city officials said Operation Endeavor, Minneapolis' new strategy to address and prevent crime, has led to a drop in carjackings in the city. According to data recorded between Sept. 27 and Oct. 24, 2022, during that period carjackings decreased 65% from the year before.
