Homicide investigation underway after woman found shot in the head in St. Paul

SPPD said the woman was found shot in the head at a residence on the 600 block of Cook Avenue East.

ST PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul homicide investigators are asking anyone with information about a Monday night shooting to come forward.

According to SPPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Mike Ernster, around 9:45 p.m. officers responded to a home on the 600 block of Cook Avenue East after getting a 911 call that a woman had been shot.

At the residence, police located an adult woman with a gunshot wound to the head.

Ernster said the woman was unconscious and not breathing and was eventually pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Officials identified the woman as 40-year-old Lashonda Nix of St. Paul.

Homicide detectives, a forensic services unit and a video management unit from SPPD are working to identify anyone that might have information about what happened.

"We need help from people. We need people to call us. If anyone saw anything that occurred out there, we would encourage them to call our homicide unit at 651-266-5650," Ernster said.

According to Sgt. Ernster, this is the city's 39th homicide of 2022, making this year the deadliest in St. Paul in recent history.

In all of 2021, the St. Paul Police Department investigated 38 homicides. The year before that, the department responded to 34.

This is a developing story. KARE 11 will provide more details as new information becomes available.
