Stillwater City Council approves Ice Castle for upcoming winter

Nearly 100,000 people visited the Ice Castle in Stillwater back during the 2017-2018 season.

STILLWATER, Minn. — After a hiatus last year, the Stillwater Ice Castle could return this winter.

In a memo sent to the mayor and council members, an agreement with Ice Castles, Inc. would bring the event to north Lowell Park at the east end of Myrtle Street for the 2019-2020 season.

According to the letter, nearly 100,000 people attended the Ice Castle event in Stillwater back in 2017 and 2018.

However, several concerns were addressed in the memo, which outlines some stipulations for event organizers.

For example, city council members say some people were concerned about the appearance of the Ice Castle, because in 2017 and 2018 it appeared "ragged at times."

This year's application requires the Ice Castle structure, equipment, fencing and other related items be "professional and neat and orderly throughout setup, operation and cleanup of the Ice Castle Event."

Ice Castle cleanup also needs to be completed by March 31, 2020. Back in 2018, ice was still in Lowell Park well into May, according to the city council.

If approved, this would be the third Ice Castle event in Stillwater.

Setup would begin in Lowell Park on October 15, 2019.
