The Minnesota Supreme Court has ruled that victims of a 1998 holiday parade crash involving a police van should receive more compensation. The court upheld a lower-court ruling that requires the city of Minneapolis to pay some additional costs. Justices agreed that the city must pay costs incurred under the state's no-fault law covering motor vehicle accidents. A St. Paul woman and her 5-year-old great-nephew were killed and eleven others were injured in the December 1998 accident. A police officer was at the wheel of a van that swerved into the crowd. Investigators determined that the city rewired the van in a way that disabled a safety interlock, allowing the officer to inadvertently shift from neutral to drive with his foot on the accelerator.
