WI hockey players spend snow day shoveling neighbors

About a dozen 7th and 8th grade players rallied, along with some siblings, and spent the day shoveling out neighbors and businesses in Amery.

AMERY, Wis. — A snow day is usually a chance for kids to relax, maybe watch TV, and generally avoid work.

But when you've had this many of them, you start getting a little antsy.

"This is like our fifth or sixth snow day and the kids are literally going stir crazy," said Erik Hellie, a hockey dad and one of the Amery Bantam Hockey Coaches in Amery, Wisconsin.

That's why the kids on the team jumped at the chance to do a little good on Tuesday, when their head coach, Jordan Maxon, sent out a note.

"He just shot an email out to everybody about noon and said, 'We’re gonna do a team activity today, everybody come dressed to be outside and bring your shovels,'" Hellie said.

About a dozen 7th and 8th grade players rallied, along with some siblings, and spent the day shoveling out neighbors and businesses in Amery.

That's not the only work they'll be doing, though. Hellie said the team plans to work until early evening -- and then go practice.

"They'll be good and tired tonight," he said.

Amery is hosting the Wisconsin Bantam Division 3 State Tournament on March 2-3.

"A little town hockey program but we’re proud, full of heart, and have good kids and families involved," Hellie said.
