A 20-year-old woman is dead after an accidental fall from Gooseberry Falls on the North Shore.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office confirms the woman, identified on her Caring Bridge site as Rebecca Nara, fell approximately 30 feet from the lower falls at Gooseberry State Park the evening of Saturday, July 13. She was airlifted to Essentia-St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth with head injuries.
Despite treatment, including surgery to take pressure off her brain, Rebecca's injuries were too severe and she passed away quietly on Wednesday.
"She peacefully went while surrounded by friends and family," reads a statement shared on the Caring Bridge site by Nara's family. "While this is truly a tragedy, it has saved her family from having to give the order to transition her to comfort care. Rebecca was a registered organ donor with healthy organs to pass on to others in need. Medical professionals said that her gifts will mean new lives for as many as 40 people. We are all very thankful for the prayers and support during this difficult time."
Nara's family thanked her medical team and the crowd at Gooseberry Falls who jumped in to help her following the accident.
