Macalester College remembers alumnus Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan was a member of Macalester's 1961 graduating class. He recently returned to the college in May.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The world is grieving former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and the loss hits close to home for Macalester College.

Kofi Annan was a member of Macalester's 1961 graduating class. He returned to the college on May 7, 2018, and at that time they unveiled the newly named Kofi Annan Istitute for Global Citizenship.

At that ceremony he said, "It all started here in 1959 when I was a student. The values and lessons I picked up here stayed with me throughout my life.”

Annan was the seventh secretary-general - and first black African secretary-general - of the United Nations. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

His foundation announced his death in Switzerland on Saturday in a tweet, saying that he died after a short unspecified illness.
